Danish Meteorological Institute warns of heavy rain in Jutland

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has forecasted heavy rain over large parts of Jutland on Sunday. Especially the southern and western parts of Jutland can expect significant amounts of precipitation. According to the duty meteorologist Mille Jensen from DMI, a combination of warm and humid air will create an unstable atmosphere, which can result in cloudbursts in several places in the country on Sunday afternoon. Cloudburst is defined as more than 15 millimeters of rain in 30 minutes.

The area from Southern Jutland and the western and central parts of Jutland, up towards Thy, are particularly vulnerable to heavy rain and thunderstorms between 12 and 21 on Sunday. DMI has issued warnings for the risk of local cloudbursts in the rest of the country from 7 am on Sunday morning until 9 pm on Sunday evening. For Bornholm, the warning applies from 10:50 am.

Meteorologist Mille Jensen describes the weather for the next 24 hours as explosive, where showers can occur suddenly and become very intense in a short period of time. It is therefore difficult to predict exactly where the local cloudbursts will hit. She compares it to a pot of water, where one must guess where the first bubble will form during boiling.

To prepare for a potential cloudburst, Mille Jensen encourages making sure that rainwater can flow away without obstruction. This can be done, among other things, by clearing gutters and ensuring that sewer drains are free of leaves.

If the forecast proves to be correct, it will be the second time this year, according to TV 2, that Denmark experiences a cloudburst. The first cloudburst this year was recorded on May 5th at Nødebo in North Zealand.
