Over 6000 lightning strikes were recorded during Sunday’s thunderstorm. One of them struck a horse at a stud farm in western Jutland. The thunderstorm raged over parts of Denmark on Sunday, which was especially felt at Stud Farm Rødstenskær near Ulfborg. Here, a horse lost its life when struck by lightning. This was reported by TV Midtvest.
“We could see the lightning strike the horse, and she fell immediately,” said the farm’s owner, 38-year-old Laura Midtgård, to the media. This is the first time Laura Midtgård has experienced such a tragic incident.
The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) had warned of rain and thunderstorms that could develop into cloudbursts in some areas until Sunday at 9 p.m. A cloudburst is defined as more than 15 millimeters of rain within 30 minutes. The sky particularly opened up over Hårslev in Northwest Funen, where a total of 67.2 millimeters of rain was measured over approximately three hours according to DMI.
“One shower simply followed another, resulting in the intense rainfall measurement,” DMI wrote on their website. The combination of warm and humid air led to cloudbursts in several places in the country, including Egtved, Hvide Sande, Grønbjerg, Junget south of Fur, and at Skagen Lighthouse. At 8:40 p.m., 6884 lightning strikes had been recorded, with over 3000 striking the ground or water according to DMI Open Data.
