With less than two weeks until the European Parliament election on June 9, Venstre (The Liberal Party) chairman, Troels Lund Poulsen, has made it clear that the party’s goal is to win two out of the total of 15 Danish seats. This announcement comes in light of the party’s current challenges.
“Back in January, I defined the success criterion, which for us is about getting two seats. We are in a different place than we were in 2019,” says Troels Lund Poulsen. In 2019, Venstre won four seats, partly thanks to the popular vote-getter Søren Gade, who has since left EU politics for a career in the Danish Parliament.
Troels Lund Poulsen acknowledges that the current opinion polls are not favorable for Venstre, but he remains optimistic about the upcoming election. “I am not working towards getting four seats for nothing. I will not be disappointed if we manage to get more than two,” he says.
According to Troels Lund Poulsen, the election result on June 9 will also influence the political discussion in Denmark. “Even though it is an election for the European Parliament, it is clear that the balance of power in terms of party support will also affect the political discussion in Denmark,” he explains.
Venstre’s lead candidate for the upcoming election is Morten Løkkegaard, and Troels Lund Poulsen is pleased with the candidate field that Venstre can field.
