In Denmark, the EU election candidates of the Danish People’s Party receive support from Inger Støjberg, while Helle Thorning-Schmidt among others supports the Social Democrats’ lead candidate. In Venstre (The Liberal Party), one of the party’s candidates has received unexpected support from a controversial influencer who was recently convicted for condoning terrorism. Alexandra Sasha, number seven on Venstre’s list for the EU election, has received support from the influencer Ahmad Elchaabi, also known as ‘Ahmarni’ on social media. Elchaabi was earlier this year convicted for approving Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel. Despite his conviction, Elchaabi has decided to get involved in the election campaign and is now promoting Sasha. In a video released on Instagram, Ahmad Elchaabi is seen driving around in his car, filming Sasha’s election posters and blowing her kisses. Sasha has shared the video on her own Instagram profile, which she also actively uses in her campaign. Although B.T. (a Danish newspaper) has tried to get a comment from Alexandra Sasha personally, Venstre’s press team has issued a written statement on her behalf. In the statement, Sasha explains that, like others, she uses social media to increase visibility around her campaign. She points out that she was not aware of Elchaabi’s conviction and will be more attentive in the future about the content shared from her profile. Ahmad Elchaabi was sentenced in February to four months of suspended imprisonment and 100 hours of community service for approving the terrorist attacks in October 2023. When B.T. contacted him for a comment on the verdict, he responded with a rude expression.
