In a remarkable decision, the Planning Appeals Board has decided to suspend the planned expansion of Aarhus Harbor, which was originally approved in 2023. This decision halts a proposed expansion of 43 hectares, equivalent to more than six soccer fields, according to Radio4.
The original local plan, adopted in June 2023, also included a future possibility of further expanding the port area by 36 hectares, equivalent to about five soccer fields. The complaint against the project was led by the Danish Society for Nature Conservation in Aarhus, supported by several local associations and the political party The Alternative (Alternativet) in the East Jutland constituency.
The complainants have now been upheld, which means that the original local plan and associated municipal planning amendments are no longer valid, according to the Planning Appeals Board’s decision.
