Delay in Ilulissat Airport Construction New delay hits Ilulissat airport construction The construction of the new airport in Ilulissat, Greenland, is facing yet another delay. According to the annual report of the aviation company Kalaallit Airports International, accessed by the Greenlandic media KNR, the airport is now expected to open at the earliest in 2026. The reason for the delay is a combination of a lack of manpower, machinery, and spare parts by the contractor, as well as tasks that have turned out to be more extensive than initially planned. This has made it impossible to follow the original schedule. “I must be honest and say that we had hoped to be able to open the airport in Ilulissat by 2025 at the latest,” says Jens Lauridsen, CEO of Kalaallit Airports International. “But at the same time, I acknowledge the challenges that Munck Gruppen (contractor) has encountered in the construction work – and I am pleased that we have been able to agree on a realistic, revised schedule for completing the construction project.” This is not the first time the construction has been delayed. As recently as December last year, the opening was postponed to 2025, and now the schedule has been further moved. Kalaallit Airports International has expressed understanding for the challenges that have affected the project, but they hope that the new schedule will bring clarity and stability towards completion.
