Weapons donated by Denmark to Ukraine may be used against Russian targets, provided that it is done in accordance with international law. This was confirmed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to TV 2 News. The Prime Minister said that it is legitimate for Ukraine to use the donated weapons on Russian territory, as long as it still follows international law. Mette Frederiksen stated that NATO’s Secretary General has also clarified this issue: “You are allowed to use what we have donated to Ukraine, even outside of Ukraine – that is, against Russian targets – if it is within international law,” she explained. Furthermore, the Prime Minister concluded that NATO’s Secretary General has stated that this is in accordance with the laws of war, as Ukraine is under attack from Russia.
The statement from Frederiksen came in the aftermath of an international meeting in Prague, where she co-hosted with representatives from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The question of weapon use beyond Ukraine’s borders has caused division among Ukraine’s Western allies, who are discussing the possibility of Ukrainian forces attacking Russian supplies on the way to the front line. The Prime Minister expressed her agreement with Ukraine’s view that effective defense requires the possibility of counterattacks. However, she emphasized that she did not want to go into details about specific examples and scenarios.
