The royal couple on traditional summer stay in Southern Jutland. On July 9, King Frederik and Queen Mary will stay at Graasten Castle, continuing the longstanding tradition of the castle serving as the summer residence for the royal family. According to a statement from the Royal House, this marks a continuation of a long-standing tradition, where the Southern Jutland castle functions as a summer home.
Graasten Castle, given as a wedding gift to King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid in 1935, has a long history as the royal family’s summer residence. Upon arrival in Southern Jutland, there will be an official welcome ceremony at the Town Square in Gråsten, where Mayor of Sønderborg Municipality, Erik Lauritzen (Social Democrats), will receive the royal couple. In a press release from Sønderborg Municipality, the mayor expresses his excitement to welcome the royal guests.
“We look forward to welcoming the royal couple in Gråsten and are very pleased that they continue the tradition that Queen Margrethe followed for many years during the summer stay at Graasten Castle. When the royal flag is raised at Graasten Castle, it marks the beginning of the summer vacation for many Southern Jutlanders,” says Erik Lauritzen.
In addition to the royal couple, Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte will also spend time at Graasten Castle during the summer. It is worth noting that when the royal family stays at the castle, the castle garden is not open to the public.
