Danish TV hosts exploited in fake ads, EU investigation initiated

A number of well-known TV hosts are being exploited in fake ads on social media, and Danish authorities have now escalated the issue to the EU. Among those affected are prominent figures like Divya Das and Anders Lund Madsen. The problem has involved unauthorized use of their images and names in scam campaigns on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, owned by Meta. Following preliminary investigations, the Danish competition authority, Konkurrence- og Forbrugerstyrelsen (Competition and Consumer Authority), has decided to refer the case to the European Commission. This was announced in a press release by the agency’s director, Jakob Hald, who directly pointed out that Meta has a responsibility to limit illegal content on their platforms, and there are indications that this obligation has not been met. According to EU legislation, social media platforms must promptly and effectively handle reports of illegal content and minimize systemic risks. The Competition and Consumer Authority believes that Meta may not be following these rules, hence they have taken steps to ensure that the case receives necessary attention at the European level. The case has also been forwarded to the Irish competition authority, as Meta’s European headquarters are located in Dublin. The issue of fraudulent ads was already raised in early May by both DR and TV 2, who jointly issued a call to Meta. Shortly before that, DR, TV 2, and B.T. had also sent an open letter to the company, urging Meta to take responsibility and remove the misleading ads and articles. The further handling of the case at the EU level will determine what consequences Meta may face regarding their lack of control over illegal content on their platforms.
