Denmark leads EU cancer screening project with artificial intelligence

Denmark takes the lead in major EU project on cancer screening with artificial intelligence. Denmark has obtained a central role in an ambitious EU project that aims to improve cancer screening in Europe through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The project, EUCanScreen, has a budget of nearly 300 million Danish kroner and aims to disseminate effective screening methods to 29 European countries. The initiative will launch in June and focus on cancer types such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and colorectal cancer, while also introducing recommended screening programs for lung, prostate, and stomach cancers.

The Danish research center for artificial intelligence, CAI-X, at Odense University Hospital (OUH) and the University of Southern Denmark, has been tasked with implementing AI solutions in the project. Benjamin Rasmussen, clinical research leader at CAI-X, sees great potential in using artificial intelligence to strengthen the healthcare system. “We are the only Danish partner in the project and see a bright future in integrating AI into cancer screening. It is also an exciting collaboration with skilled partners across Europe who will ensure that we work with AI in the best and most responsible manner,” says Rasmussen.

The project aims to share the best Danish experiences with cancer screening and implement them in other European countries. OUH will, for example, focus on expanding the use of AI in the diagnosis of breast cancer. Peter Børker Nielsen, the daily leader at CAI-X, highlights the significant perspectives of the project, especially in light of the upcoming parliamentary election in the EU, where combating cancer is a central issue. “Europe accounts for 25% of all cancer cases globally, even though we only make up 10% of the world’s population. This project is an important step towards reducing this inequality and improving public health across Europe,” says Nielsen.

With this project, a new chapter is written in the fight against cancer, where Denmark and European cooperation play a key role in implementing groundbreaking technologies for the benefit of patients.
