Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Socialdemokratiet) has once again dismissed rumors of her candidacy for a top position in the EU. In an interview with Jyllands-Posten, she acknowledges that she is “a name on the European rumor mill”, but maintains that she is not a candidate for an EU job. Frederiksen states in the interview that she cannot stop the rumors herself, but expects to be able to do so once the current political puzzle is complete, and she will still be prime minister in a month’s time.
Both last summer and this summer, Mette Frederiksen has been mentioned in international media as one of the favorites for top positions in Brussels. Last year, there were speculations about the NATO Secretary-General position, while this year, it is specifically the position of President of the European Council that is being discussed. Jyllands-Posten asked the Prime Minister whether she believes one has more power as Danish Prime Minister or as President of the European Council. Frederiksen responded that as Prime Minister, one can “have great influence in both the EU and NATO.” With this statement, the Prime Minister hopes to dampen speculations and continue her work as the leader of the Danish government.
