Venstre candidate’s campaign car illegally parked in Copenhagen intersection

Friday morning, resident of Østerbro Kristian Rastrup was met with a striking sight as he was on his way to work. In the middle of Trianglen, one of the busiest intersections in Copenhagen, the lead candidate for Venstre (Right) Morten Løkkegaard’s campaign car was illegally parked on the sidewalk in front of a 7-Eleven store with the hazard lights on. “His car was parked there, very foolishly and in the middle of the intersection with hazard lights on,” Kristian Rastrup recounts, adding, “I think it could be interesting to hear if a law and order party like Venstre thinks that’s proper parking.” The Technical and Environmental Department of the City of Copenhagen confirmed that the parking was illegal and in violation of several provisions in the Road Traffic Act. “From the photo, it appears that the car was parked on the sidewalk – possibly with part of the car jutting out into the intersection. It follows from the Road Traffic Act § 28, para. 3 and § 29, para. 1, no. 2, that it is not legal to stop either on the sidewalk or in an intersection,” the department states. The fact that the car had the hazard lights on only worsens the situation according to the department. “When there is a no-stopping rule, one must not stop at all – not even to pick up goods or similar, nor even if the hazard lights are turned on. If the car had broken down, it would have been a different situation, as there are then 18 hours to move the car,” the department writes. Venstre explains that a campaign worker was inside the 7-Eleven to pick up “fresh supplies” for Morten Løkkegaard, who was handing out breakfast and flyers at Østerport Station. “While Morten Løkkegaard at Østerport was handing out breakfast to happy citizens on their way to school and work, a campaign worker picked up fresh supplies, and in that process, apparently made a stop at a corner,” Venstre’s press office writes, adding, “It should not happen again, and we hope that the brief stop was not a nuisance to other road users.” Morten Løkkegaard himself was in the media spotlight Thursday evening, where he expressed his full support for the former Venstre candidate Alexandra Sasha, who according to Løkkegaard has been subjected to “a huge smear campaign.”
