The Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Søren Gade (V), has strongly condemned Friday’s attack on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S), which took place on the streets of Copenhagen. In a statement to Ritzau, Gade says that he is “horrified that someone in Denmark could attack the Prime Minister on the streets of Copenhagen. It is completely unheard of and totally unacceptable that a politician cannot move freely without risking such a despicable act.” Gade describes the incident as “an attack on our democracy, which we have just celebrated in honor of the 175th anniversary of the Constitution.” He calls on all democratic forces to come together and condemn the attack. “The best defense of democracy is for all democratic forces to unite and strongly condemn the attack. At the same time, my warmest thoughts go to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, her husband, Bo, and their children,” he adds. The exact nature of the incident has not been clarified yet, but it has been reported that Frederiksen was struck by a man at Kultorvet in Copenhagen. According to two eyewitnesses, it was a strong push, however, the Prime Minister’s Office has not confirmed these details. The Prime Minister’s Office has also not provided any additional comments on the Prime Minister’s condition. Copenhagen Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested in connection with the case, and that the investigation is ongoing.
