Exit polls indicate a significant decline for Venstre (The Liberal Party) in the recent EU election, according to exit polls from DR and TV 2. The polls, based on interviews with voters at polling stations, suggest that Venstre will lose two of their current four seats. However, these results are not official and will only be confirmed after 23:00. TV 2’s polls show that Venstre is expected to receive 11.6% of the votes, a marked decrease from the 23.5% the party achieved in the last election in 2019. DR’s polls are slightly more optimistic for the party, giving them 13.9% of the votes. Regardless, this election may mark the worst performance for Venstre in the history of the EU Parliament, where the party has never previously had fewer than two seats. Their best result so far was in 1999 when they managed to secure five seats.
Morten Løkkegaard, who is the lead candidate for Venstre in this election, previously had a seat in the EU Parliament from 2009 to 2014 but failed to be re-elected. In 2014, the party’s seats went to Ulla Tørnæs and Jens Rohde. When Tørnæs was called back to Denmark in 2016 to become a minister under then-Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Løkkegaard took her place as first substitute. Asger Christensen, second on Venstre’s list, has been in the EU Parliament since 2019. Although the final results have not been announced yet, the exit polls paint a bleak picture for Venstre.
