Danish EU election sees 50% turnout two hours before polls close

A preliminary sample conducted by Ritzau shows that voter turnout in the EU parliamentary elections stands at 50 percent two hours before the polling stations close. Compared to local and national elections, EU parliamentary elections have traditionally struggled to attract the attention of the Danish population. Nevertheless, several million Danes have already cast their votes in today’s election. The sample, conducted by Ritzau among 12 municipalities, indicates a voter turnout of 50.0 percent at 6 pm. This means that every other eligible voter has exercised their right to vote at this point. In comparison, a similar sample in the last EU election in 2019 showed a preliminary voter turnout of 55.9 percent at the same time. With a difference of 5.9 percentage points, it appears that this year’s voter turnout will be lower than the 66.1 percent achieved in the last election. However, when compared to the EU election in 2014, a similar sample at that time indicated a preliminary voter turnout of 48.2 percent at 6 pm. The voter turnout ended up being 56.3 percent, which is the third-highest ever in an EU parliamentary election in Denmark. The second-highest voter turnout in an EU parliamentary election was achieved in 2009 when a referendum on changing the order of succession to the throne took place simultaneously, contributing to a voter turnout of 59.5 percent. The polling stations close at 8 pm tonight, and nearly 4.3 million Danes have the opportunity to vote in today’s election.
