The government parties experience a significant decline in the EU Parliament elections. In the latest EU Parliament election in 2019, Venstre was the largest party, but new exit polls from DR and TV 2 indicate that the party is now facing a significant decline. The same goes for Socialdemokratiet (The Social Democrats). The exit polls, which were released at 8:00 PM, show that the government parties overall are declining significantly compared to the previous election. Minister of Education Mattias Tesfaye (S) commented on the situation and emphasized the importance of maintaining three seats. “For me, the crucial thing is that we seem to be able to retain three seats. Europe is a difficult place right now, we have war on the continent, we need to ensure the green transition without losing jobs,” he says. According to TV 2, Socialdemokratiet is set to receive 18% of the votes, while DR’s measurement shows 15.4%. In the 2019 election, the party received 21.5%. SF (The Socialist People’s Party) also looks set to receive three seats, and the party seems to be collecting more votes than Socialdemokratiet, which traditionally has been the largest party in Denmark. Tesfaye, however, emphasized that the focus is not on competition between parties, but rather on solving society’s challenges. “It’s about solving the tasks that exist in society. It’s not a war against other parties. Socialdemokratiet is not in a fight with other parties, we are in a fight with the challenges that exist in our society,” he says. Venstre (The Liberal Party) is set to receive 11.6% of the votes according to TV 2, while DR’s measurement shows 13.9%. In the 2019 election, Venstre received 23.5% of the votes, making them the largest party. The significant decline means that Venstre looks set to lose half of their seats and will be left with two seats in the EU Parliament. Despite the decline, Socialdemokratiet looks set to retain three seats, as they did in 2019. However, it is important to note that the exit polls are based on interviews with voters at polling stations and are not official results. The final results will only be announced after 11:00 PM.
