Denmark Democrats (Danmarksdemokraterne) are running for the European Parliament election for the first time. Sunday marks a significant day for Denmark Democrats, as the party is for the first time on the ballot in a European Parliament election. The party leader, Inger Støjberg, cast her vote at Hadsundhallerne and expressed hope that the party would be able to secure at least one candidate a seat in the parliament. “I really hope that we get one elected, and that it will be Kristoffer Storm,” Støjberg stated, referring to the party’s lead candidate. However, she added that the election is difficult to predict for a new party like Denmark Democrats. Støjberg, who recently had to interrupt her election campaign due to an emergency appendectomy, was back on her feet on Saturday to continue the campaign. She underscored the importance of the election for the party, established in 2022. “It is a big and extremely exciting day for us. Historically, new parties have struggled in their first European Parliament elections,” she said, noting that this election is more unpredictable than before, partly due to expectations of a low voter turnout.
Kristoffer Storm, the party’s lead candidate, accompanied Støjberg when casting their votes. Storm is a city council member in Aalborg and a councilor for Senior and Care. The party has a clear stance on the EU: while they acknowledge the benefits of European cooperation, they believe that the EU interferes too much in national affairs. Therefore, Denmark Democrats aim to reduce the EU’s power and focus on core tasks such as the refugee situation and strengthening the EU’s external borders. The party has not yet decided which group they will seek to join if they have a representative elected. This will be determined once the election results are known. “We do not want to be in groups where members cannot distance themselves from Putin. We are unequivocally on Ukraine’s side, and this will be reflected in our choice of group,” Støjberg affirmed.
