Liberal Alliance (Venstrealliancen) faces a historic opportunity in the European Parliament elections, where party leader Alex Vanopslagh hopes for a breakthrough with up to two seats. Vanopslagh expressed great optimism at the Skolen på Strandboulevarden in Copenhagen, where he cast his vote and stated to TV 2 News that he would be “overjoyed” with the 7.9 percent of the votes, which could secure two seats. This election is particularly significant for Liberal Alliance as the party has never had representation in the EU Parliament before. Vanopslagh, however, is convinced that the party will at least secure one seat in this election, which would be a historic milestone.
The latest polls from Epinion and Megafon give the party reasons for optimism, as they predict that Liberal Alliance could obtain two out of the 15 Danish seats. Henrik Dahl, a longstanding member of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), is the lead candidate for Liberal Alliance. He is followed by Mads Strange, a political advisor for the party, and Thorbjørn Jacobsen, who is number three on the list.
Liberal Alliance has previously expressed ambitions to become part of the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest group in the European Parliament before the election. The party’s political platform includes desires to strengthen the EU’s competitiveness, reduce EU regulations in the Danish labor market, improve EU border control, and establish reception centers in third countries.
With a strong belief in success, Liberal Alliance approaches this election with the hope of marking a new era in the party’s history with representation in the EU Parliament.
