Liberal Alliance poised for historic victory in EU parliamentary election

Liberal Alliance on track for historic victory in the EU parliamentary elections. For the first time ever, Liberal Alliance seems to secure a seat in the EU Parliament. According to the initial polling from both DR and TV 2, immediately after the polling stations closed at 8 pm, the party is set to receive between one and two seats. TV 2’s poll indicates that Liberal Alliance will obtain two seats with a vote share of 9.7 percent. DR’s poll is slightly more modest, granting the party one seat based on 7.8 percent of the votes. This marks a significant improvement from the 2019 election, where the party only received 2.2 percent of the votes, equivalent to just under 60,700 votes. The party’s lead candidate, Henrik Dahl, and the number two on the list, Mads Strange, can therefore look forward to potentially representing Liberal Alliance in the EU Parliament. Dahl is currently a member of parliament, while Strange serves as a political adviser for the party. The political spokesperson, Sólbjørg Jakobsen, states that the preliminary results look “really good” for the party. “I’m not quite sure what we had expected. It’s difficult,” she says about the party’s expectations for the election.

This election is Liberal Alliance’s fourth attempt to enter the EU Parliament, this time under the leadership of Alex Vanopslagh. The party has previously struggled to gain sufficient support in EU elections, but the current polls indicate a significant change in voter support. At the same time, Danskernes Parti (The Danish Democrats), who are participating in the EU parliamentary elections for the first time, seem to secure one seat. The party’s lead candidate is Kristoffer Storm. The polling is based on interviews with voters who disclose their vote as they leave the polling stations. Although the polls provide an indication of the election results, they are not official. The final results will be announced after 11 pm.

Liberal Alliance has expressed interest in joining the European People’s Party (EPP), which was the largest group in the EU Parliament before the election. This is the same group that Venstre (The Conservatives) are already a part of, and according to both DR and TV 2, Venstre seems to maintain their one seat with an increase in vote percentage. Therefore, the preliminary results point to a historic victory for Liberal Alliance in this EU parliamentary election.
