Low Voter Turnout in Today’s EU Election Compared to 2019

The voter turnout in today’s EU election is lower compared to the election five years ago. By noon, only just over a fifth of voters have cast their votes, which is a decrease compared to 2019, when a record number of people participated. According to a survey conducted by Ritzau in 13 municipalities, representing nearly 530,000 voters, the voter turnout at 12 o’clock is calculated at 22.2 percent, including postal votes. For comparison, the voter turnout at the same time in 2019 was at 24.6 percent. The current election seems to be slightly below the level of 2019, when the overall voter turnout reached 66.1 percent, a record high. Back then, postal votes accounted for 5.75 percent of votes cast, while this year they only account for 5.1 percent according to the survey. Despite the slight decrease in voter turnout, it is still too early to conclude how the overall voter turnout will end up.
