For the second time in just one month, Danish consumers have been hit by a salmonella infection. According to figures from the State Serum Institute (SSI), the latest outbreak includes 43 infected patients – 27 men and 16 women aged 3 to 85. SSI emphasizes, however, that the actual number of sick individuals is likely much higher, as not everyone seeks medical attention or gets tested. Epidemiologist Luise Müller from SSI explains that examinations of the bacteria show that the salmonella type is identical at the DNA level, indicating that all patients were infected from the same source. Interviews with the affected patients once again point to minced beef as the source of infection, just as was the case in the recent outbreak. Less than a month ago, 64 patients were infected with a salmonella type that was found to originate from minced beef imported from England.
