Danish Democrats and Moderates secure seats in EU Parliament

Denmark’s Democrats (Danmarksdemokraterne) and the Moderates (Moderaterne) have each secured a seat in the EU Parliament. In the latest EU election, both Denmark’s Democrats and the Moderates, who were both running for the first time, have each secured a mandate in the EU Parliament. According to DR’s seat distribution, based on complete vote counts, Denmark’s Democrats obtained 7.4 percent of the votes, while the Moderates received 5.9 percent. The representatives of these two parties in Brussels are expected to be Kristoffer Storm, a council member in Aalborg for Denmark’s Democrats, and businesswoman Stine Bosse from the Moderates. However, it will only be finally confirmed when the personal votes are counted later on Monday.

It has been an exciting election night for the Moderates, as their future in the EU Parliament was long uncertain. The party already had a seat, obtained when Bergur Løkke Rasmussen switched from Venstre to the Moderates in 2023. In the first exit polls from TV 2, it seemed that the party would lose its seat, but later consistent forecasts from both TV 2 and DR showed that the Moderates could retain their mandate. Bergur Løkke Rasmussen, who ran as number two on the list, however, risks losing his seat if the party only gets one mandate, as the forecasts indicate.

The leader of the Moderates, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, has stated that the election result is a “pointed finger from the voters” and stressed the need for new thinking in the government. The other two government parties, the Social Democrats and Venstre, have also experienced poorer election results compared to 2019. Løkke Rasmussen believes that the government collectively should reassess and revitalize their political work to remain relevant.

The Moderates had hoped to obtain two mandates, but had to settle for one, making their election the second worst among all parties. Only the Alternativet performed worse with 2.7 percent of the votes.
