Danish Musician Annika Aakjær Shares Experiences of Sexism

Annika Aakjær, the prominent Danish musician and songwriter, is one of the women coming forward to share her experiences with inappropriate behavior in the music industry. In the new documentary from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), “Sexism in the Music Industry,” she reveals how she refused to work with a male artist due to his reputation for crossing boundaries and inappropriate behavior. On Facebook, she writes: Aakjær emphasizes that the documentary should not be seen as a ‘me too’ documentary, but as an investigation of sexism. “There is a difference between the two, even though they are part of the same structure, where sexism ultimately enables other things,” she explains. She encourages people to watch the documentary with an open and empathetic heart.

DR’s documentary, released in two parts, sheds light on the widespread sexism in the music industry. In the first part titled “You have to be young and fuckable,” eight female musicians share their experiences with inappropriate behavior from male colleagues.
