Danish Parties Face Unequal Results in EU Parliament Elections

In the recent EU parliamentary election, an interesting situation arose for Alternativet (The Alternative) and SF (Socialistisk Folkeparti – Socialist People’s Party). Jan Kristoffersen from Alternativet, who served as the party’s lead candidate, received 14,273 personal votes. Despite this impressive result, he was not elected to the EU Parliament. In comparison, Rasmus Nordqvist from SF received 11,525 personal votes, but still secured a seat in the parliament. This difference in outcome was due to the way the seats were allocated. Data from the IT company KMD, responsible for the official vote count, shows that Alternativet was the only Danish party that did not manage to secure any seats in the election. Alternativet received 2.66 percent of the total votes, which was not enough to secure them a seat in the EU Parliament. SF, on the other hand, emerged as the big winner of the election with 17.4 percent of the votes and three seats. The party’s lead candidate, Kira Marie Peter-Hansen, stood out by receiving a total of 178,438 personal votes, making her the biggest vote-getter of the election.
