Danish SF party secures historic victory in EU elections

Sunday’s EU election resulted in a historic victory for the Socialist People’s Party (SF), which can now send three members to the European Parliament. According to the preliminary count, former member of the Danish Parliament Rasmus Nordqvist appears to secure the third seat for the party. SF’s lead candidate, Kira Marie Peter-Hansen, and former Foreign Minister and SF leader Villy Søvndal are already guaranteed two of the three seats. In the election that took place on Sunday, SF surpassed the Social Democrats and became the largest party in Denmark in terms of seats in the EU Parliament. Kira Marie Peter-Hansen, who led the party’s campaign, received well over 100,000 personal votes, securing another term in the parliament. In the previous EU election in 2019, she received 15,765 votes, which was not enough for a seat. However, she eventually became a member when party colleague Karsten Hønge chose to pass on his mandate after being elected to the Danish Parliament. Villy Søvndal, who was placed third on SF’s list, also performed well in the election and received a higher number of votes than Nordqvist, despite his position. SF has traditionally held one or two seats in the European Parliament since the first election in 1979, but this time they can celebrate an expansion to three seats. The final count is not yet complete, but all signs point to SF having three representatives in the European Parliament for the first time in the party’s history. It will be interesting to see how this will affect the party’s influence and policies in the coming years.
