Denmark Faces New Salmonella Outbreak: Ground Beef Suspected

Denmark hit by another salmonella outbreak: Minced beef in focus Denmark is facing a new salmonella outbreak, and once again minced beef is under suspicion. According to the State Serum Institute, there have been reported 43 cases of salmonella infection, but the actual number of infected individuals is likely much higher, as many do not seek medical help or get tested. “We are experiencing a rapidly growing outbreak of salmonella. The actual number of sick people is undoubtedly higher, as not everyone seeks a doctor or gets tested,” says epidemiologist Luise Müller. Authorities are not yet sure where the infected beef comes from, but investigations are underway to find the source. For now, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration strongly advises against consuming raw minced beef. “Section leader at the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, Annette Perge, reports that two thirds of the current patients have either tasted raw meat or used regular minced beef for steak tartare. This is strongly discouraged,” the press release states. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and fever. In addition, joint and muscle pain as well as headaches may be experienced. To minimize the risk of infection, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration recommends the following precautions: – Buy minced meat specifically intended for steak tartare, which will be indicated on the packaging or ask the butcher. – Wash hands before and after handling raw meat. – Avoid tasting raw meat, such as raw minced meat. – Ensure that raw meat is kept separate from ready-to-eat food such as salad. – Cook minced meat thoroughly. Less than a month ago, 64 Danes were also affected by a salmonella infection, which was traced back to minced beef imported from England.
