High Voter Turnout on Danish Island: 89.7% Participate in EU Election

The Danish Article: “Democracy thrives on a small Danish island: 89.7 percent participated in EU election on Askø On Askø, a small island located north of the coast of Lolland, a total of 26 out of 29 eligible voters participated in the recently held EU parliamentary election. The impressive voter turnout of 89.7 percent places Askø at the top among Danish polling stations when it comes to voter engagement in this election. Askø, located north of Bandholm on Lolland, can boast of achieving the highest voter turnout in Denmark in this EU parliamentary election. Of the 29 eligible residents on the island, 26 had either voted in advance by postal vote or showed up at Askø School on the day of the election to cast their votes. This makes Askø the smallest polling station in Denmark, measured by the number of eligible voters, followed by Mandø, which has 31 voters. The voting process on Askø was quickly completed, and it only took 10 minutes from the last votes were cast until the result was clear and reported. Venstre (The Liberal Party) and Danmarksdemokraterne (The Danish Democrats) tied for first place with six votes each, while the Moderates received five votes. The Radical Left, Socialist People’s Party, and Liberal Alliance did not receive any votes from the residents of Askø, and one voter chose to cast a blank vote. Askø is not unique in its high voter turnout among Danish island communities. On Alrø, an island in Horsens Fjord, 84 percent of eligible voters participated, and on Christiansø near Bornholm, 83.3 percent of voters exercised their right to vote. The numbers show that democracy stands strong on the small Danish islands, where citizens are highly engaged in political processes and utilize their voting rights.”
