Social Democrats acknowledge disappointing election result in the EU election. Social Democrats must admit to a less satisfying performance in the recent EU election, where the party is set to secure three seats. Lead candidate Christel Schaldemose expresses disappointment that the party has not managed to attract more voters. “We have gained three seats in the European Parliament. I had hoped and fought for more people to vote for the Social Democrats, of course. I actually don’t think our result tonight is good enough, but we still have three seats,” says Schaldemose.
Compared to the EU election in 2019, the Social Democrats have experienced a decline of 5.9 percentage points. Although the party will retain three seats for the next five years, it has overall received fewer votes. According to forecasts from both DR and TV 2, the Socialist People’s Party (SF) is the party that has attracted the most Danish voters in this election. However, it is worth noting that forecasts are projected analyses and not definitive results, soon to be publicly released.
The leader of the Social Democrats and current Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, was originally supposed to give the election speech. However, she has canceled her events after being assaulted on Friday evening. Therefore, lead candidate Schaldemose gave the speech, which turned out to be a concession speech.
Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen, who is second in the party, commented on the result earlier in the evening, but left it to Schaldemose to deliver the main speech. “It was clear from the start of this election campaign that this would not be easy. But thank you to those of you who got up early and handed out breakfast and pamphlets. Thank you to those who put up posters and will soon be up in the lampposts again,” said Schaldemose.
It has thus been a challenging election campaign for the Social Democrats, who are now faced with analyzing and reflecting on the election result.
