Venstre emerges as the largest conservative party at the EU election, but the party also experiences a significant reduction in the number of seats. With all votes counted, the final result shows that Venstre obtains 14.7 percent of the votes, which gives the party two seats in the EU Parliament. This is a halving of the four seats the party secured in the 2019 election. Data from the IT company KMD, which has been responsible for the official count, confirms this development. Despite the decrease of 8.8 percentage points from 23.5 percent in 2019, Venstre could still rejoice over being the largest conservative party. The atmosphere was high at the party’s election party, and leader Troels Lund Poulsen was met with cheers when he took the stage.
“It is a completely unbelievable relief compared to what we have been through for a little while now,” stated Troels Lund Poulsen. “Many have wanted to write off Venstre, but once again we have proven that Venstre is a strong and historic party. Now we have reached about 15 percent of the votes for the European Parliament election, and that is fantastic.” Venstre’s lead candidate, Morten Løkkegaard, also expressed his satisfaction with the result earlier in the evening when the projections from DR and TV 2 were announced around 11:00 pm.
“I think I will repeat what I said in 2019, if anyone remembers it: We did it,” exclaimed a emotional Morten Løkkegaard to the party’s supporters. Løkkegaard, who was the biggest vote-getter in the 2019 election, noted that the party has faced significant challenges since then. He referred to the internal conflicts that led to former leader Lars Løkke Rasmussen and former deputy leader Inger Støjberg leaving Venstre and founding their own parties, the Moderates and the Danish Democrats. Both of these parties have secured one seat each in the EU Parliament in this election. Historically, Venstre has never had fewer than two seats in the EU Parliament, and the party’s best election result was in 1999, when it achieved five seats.
