Danish Social Democrats suffer significant setback in EU Parliament election

The Social Democrats experienced a significant decline in the EU Parliament election, with almost six percentage points compared to 2019. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Social Democrats) stated in an interview with DR that the election result should be seen as a clear “warning” to the government. This election marked the Social Democrats’ worst result ever in an EU election and the worst overall election result in 100 years. “The result is in no way satisfactory. I see it as a warning and a raised finger. You cannot get an election result like this and claim that there will be no changes. There will be changes, but what they exactly entail, it is too early to determine,” said Mette Frederiksen. In this election, the Social Democrats obtained 15.6 percent of the votes, marking a significant decline from 2019. At the same time, the Socialist People’s Party (SF) surpassed the Social Democrats in size. If you add up the seats from the governing parties of the Social Democrats, Venstre (Liberal Party), and the Conservatives, they together have six seats, which is just over a third of the votes in the EU Parliament election. The Prime Minister expressed her regret over the result.
