Danish Circus Tradition Receives Necessary Boost with Five Million Funding

The Danish circus tradition receives a necessary boost with significant financial support. Seven circuses in Denmark are set to receive a total of five million Danish kroner, announced by cultural spokespersons from the ruling parties and Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt (Conservative Party). The funding comes from the gaming revenue funds, a pool under the Ministry of Culture, as explained by the Social Democrats in a press release. The support is distributed based on ticket sales, with Circus Arena being the largest recipient receiving 1.8 million kroner. The remaining funds are divided among Circus Baldoni, Zirkus Nemo, Circus Mascot, Circus Arli, Circus Trapez, and Circus Krone. The cultural spokespersons from the Social Democrats, Venstre (Liberal Party), and Moderates underline the importance of preserving this part of Danish cultural heritage. Social Democrat Mogens Jensen highlights the significance of the many fond childhood memories, while Venstre’s Jan E. Jørgensen emphasizes the challenges the industry faces: “Unfortunately, the circus industry is struggling, so it is necessary to support it,” states Jørgensen. Historically, circuses have been a staple of Danish culture since the first show in 1799 and the first actual circus tent in 1855. In the past, predators were part of the performances, which are now prohibited. However, ordinary domestic animals and horses still perform. This financial assistance aims to ensure that the circus tradition remains a vibrant part of Danish culture, despite the challenges the industry faces.
