Danish shops allowed to reject 1000-kroner notes for small purchases

Shops can now reject 1000-kroner bills for smaller purchases. The Ministry of Business has announced that as of Wednesday, shops can reject 1000-kroner bills for purchases under 250 kroner. This is an adjustment from the original plan, which allowed rejection for purchases under 500 kroner. The change has come into effect as part of the phasing out of the 1000-kroner bill, which will no longer be valid in Denmark from May 31, 2025. The government has justified the phase-out stating that the 1000-kroner bill is often used for economic crimes. At the same time, there has been a desire to find a balance that also considers the shopping habits of the elderly and singles. Minister of Business Morten Bødskov (Social Democrats) stated: “We have listened to the concerns of the business community, and now we are giving shops the option to reject bills for purchases under 250 kroner. In this way, we have struck a good balance where cash payments are still possible, and at the same time, we are increasing the security for our shop employees.”
