Danish MP Dennis Flydtkjær considers leaving Parliament for personal reasons

Dennis Flydtkjær from the Danish Democrats is considering leaving Christiansborg (the Danish Parliament) due to personal reasons. According to TV Midtvest, Flydtkjær, the finance spokesperson for the Danish Democrats, revealed on the show “Borgen Behind the Scenes” that he would not run for re-election if an election were held tomorrow. The 46-year-old politician has gone through a divorce, and his ex-wife is chronically ill, meaning he has to take care of their three children alone. Flydtkjær stated to TV Midtvest: “It’s not a choice I can make whether it should be my children or politics. Of course, it’s the children. In my situation, I can’t run for another four-year term.” Flydtkjær went on sick leave in December due to a death in the family. He described on Facebook how a “storm of challenges” had hit him and his family, including a death, a close family member’s mental illness, and a benign cyst that one of his children had in their head but couldn’t be removed due to its size. “All these things combined are a great burden for me and especially for my children, who are under pressure and need a father who is not in Copenhagen most days of the week,” Flydtkjær wrote on Facebook. Dennis Flydtkjær lives in Snejbjerg in Herning Municipality and has had a long career at Christiansborg. He was first elected to the parliament in 2011 as a member of the Danish People’s Party and has had several periods as a temporary member of parliament.
