Denmark and Germany are strengthening defense cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. The two countries will, among other things, work closer together to deter potential threats in the Baltic Sea area and support Ukraine. This is stated in a press release from the Ministry of Defense. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen and his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, have signed a declaration of intent on enhanced defense cooperation. “We are in a heightened security situation with war in Ukraine and a hybrid threat picture with threats of attacks on critical infrastructure and spread of misinformation,” Troels Lund Poulsen said in the press release. He emphasized the importance of closer cooperation with Denmark’s neighboring countries.
The new agreement with Germany comes shortly after Denmark and Sweden entered into a defense agreement last month. As part of the Danish-Swedish agreement, the countries will collaborate on the armored combat vehicle CV90, which is used by both Sweden and Denmark and produced in Sweden. The agreement involves Denmark and Sweden exploring the possibilities of joint procurement of these combat vehicles, which is part of the establishment of a heavy brigade of 6000 soldiers, as outlined in the Danish defense agreement. The details of the specific content of the agreement between Denmark and Germany have not been made public yet.
