Experts: Russian hybrid warfare targets Bornholm with GPS disruptions Several experts assess that GPS disruptions in the Baltic Sea are part of Russian hybrid warfare, which now also affects Bornholm. Twice in May, both Bornholm and southern Sweden were hit by GPS disruptions to an extent not previously seen in Denmark. One nighttime attack lasted 11 hours, while another lasted six hours. This is based on recordings from several GNSS reference stations, including one located in Tejn on Bornholm. According to the Danish Emergency Management Agency (Beredskabsstyrelsen), GPS disruptions are also known as GPS jamming. Søren Reime Larsen, a researcher in GPS jamming at DTU Space, says it is remarkable that the disruptions lasted so long. By comparison, the most recent known similar GPS disruption was only ten minutes long. Reime Larsen assesses that the GPS jamming near Bornholm originated from vessels in the waters between Bornholm and Sweden. Several experts, including André Ken Jakobsson from the University of Southern Denmark, believe that the GPS jamming is a Russian attempt to exert pressure on Denmark, especially regarding Denmark’s support for Ukraine. Jakobsson points out that Russia uses GPS jamming as part of their hybrid warfare tactics. Both the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) and the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (FE) assess that the threat from Russian hybrid warfare against Denmark is increasing. Hybrid warfare involves disruptions, sabotage, and other attacks that remain below an actual military level that could trigger counteractions. FE has chosen not to comment directly on the information about GPS jamming near Bornholm, but refers to a threat assessment published on 24 May. This assessment reveals that GPS jamming over the Baltic Sea has been increasing since December 2023, and that it is “highly likely that Russia is behind the jamming.”
