RenĂ© Christensen from the Moderate Party (Moderaterne) was involved in a serious cycling accident on Thursday as he was on his way to the People’s Meeting (Folkemødet) in Allinge on Bornholm. The accident resulted in five stitches, a damaged shoulder, elbow, and hand, as well as a sore head. Despite the severe injuries, he considers himself lucky, as he told 365nyt.dk.
“I think I have actually been quite lucky,” says René Christensen. The accident occurred as he was cycling down a hill at high speed and collided with three other cyclists coming from the side. “I rang the bell and braked, but ended up falling forward headfirst,” he describes. René Christensen hit the ground with his shoulder and hand, which also meant his head hit the asphalt hard. Fortunately, there were people present, including a doctor who quickly came to his aid.
“I was actually ready to continue to my debates, but the doctor said no and asked me to lie down,” he says. Afterwards, an ambulance was called, and René Christensen was taken to the hospital in Rønne, where he received treatment. However, he had to admit that he was not wearing a helmet during the accident.
“Normally, I wear a helmet, but maybe I left it behind because of the white shirt,” he says, adding that he has learned his lesson the hard way. He now strongly urges the use of helmets and adds that his cycling activities at the People’s Meeting are suspended for now.
“It will be by car back and forth. I will not be cycling anytime soon,” he says. Despite the seriousness of the accident, RenĂ© Christensen is grateful that he escaped without any broken bones or concussion. The People’s Meeting takes place from June 13th to 15th on Bornholm.
