A growing number of Danes report fraud in online transactions. A new study shows that more and more Danes are experiencing fraud in online transactions or have their payment information misused. According to the Crime Prevention Council (Det Kriminalpræventive Råd), almost 190,000 Danes were victims of cybercrime in 2023, an increase from around 150,000 the year before. The survey, conducted by the Crime Prevention Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, the National Police, and the University of Copenhagen, highlights the risk for all age groups and both genders.
Erik Christensen, director of the Crime Prevention Council, states that many people overestimate their ability to detect fraud, while criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated. The most common form of cybercrime is fraud in online transactions. In 2023, 85,000 Danes were deceived by shopping on fake websites or through transactions with private individuals. This is an increase from 64,000 people in 2022.
