Three of Five Storm-Damaged Clifftop Staircases Reopened at Møns Klint

Visitors have once again gained access to the beach at Møns Klint, as three of the five stairs that were destroyed during the storm surge in October have now been reopened. The Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen) announced that the stairs “Gråryg,” “Jydelejetrappen,” and “Maglevands Fald” are once again accessible after extensive repair work, which was delayed by several major landslides in the winter and spring months. Forest ranger Jane Skov Lind states that it is extremely positive that visitors can now experience both the top and bottom of the unique cliff in its full glory, especially with the many visitors expected during the school summer holidays.

While these three stairs are now usable, the stairs “Liselund” and “Røde Udfald” are still under repair. “Liselund” stands on an unstable sandy area, and there are plans to possibly transform it into a trail with earth steps when the sand has stabilized. The reopening of this staircase is expected in the autumn. “Røde Udfald,” which requires a new route, is planned to be completed either in 2025 or 2026. Møns Klint is a popular destination, especially in the summer, and with a height of 128 meters, it is Denmark’s highest cliff. It consists of vertical layers of chalk, originating from 70 million-year-old calcareous plates from microscopic algae. The entire area is part of the chalk layer on which large parts of Denmark rest.
