The authorities have released a list of essential items that Danes should have in their homes in case of an emergency. At a press conference on Saturday, led by Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen (V) and director of the Danish Emergency Management Agency (Beredskabsstyrelsen), Laila Reenberg, it was emphasized that Denmark is in a “serious situation”. It was recommended that as a starting point, one should be able to sustain themselves for three days. Here is the complete list of the authorities’ recommendations:
- Water: Three liters of drinking water per person per day is recommended, as well as water for household pets.
- Food: Long-lasting and easy-to-prepare food should be available.
- Medicine and first aid: This includes necessary medication for the household, a first aid kit, and possibly iodine tablets for individuals under 40 years old, as well as for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
- Heat: Blankets, duvets, and warm clothing are recommended to keep warm in a crisis.
- Other necessities: Power bank for mobile phones, flashlight, batteries, physical payment cards, candles, and matches.
- Special needs: Special preparations for vulnerable citizens, including children and the elderly, or if you live near risk areas such as flood zones.
- Communication: An FM radio powered by batteries, hand crank, or solar panels is recommended to stay informed with news and information.
Although the Minister of Defense emphasized that there is no direct military threat to Denmark, he pointed out that several factors together make it necessary to provide these recommendations. “This is about being prepared in case an incident should occur,” said Troels Lund Poulsen. Interestingly, the minister revealed that he has not yet acquired the items on the list himself, which according to him is a signal that there is no reason to panic.
