DMI warns of heavy rain and risk of cloudbursts this weekend. Saturday will bring significant amounts of rain to large parts of Denmark, warns the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). Between 25 and 35 millimeters of precipitation are expected in Jutland until Saturday evening, according to DMI’s latest forecast. There are warnings issued for both heavy rain and local cloudbursts in the western part of the country, while Eastern Denmark is only facing the risk of local cloudbursts. Pernille Hansen, the on-duty meteorologist at DMI, explains the difference: “During a cloudburst, 15 millimeters of rain or more falls in just 30 minutes. Heavy rain, on the other hand, involves at least 24 millimeters of precipitation over a period of six hours,” she says.
Bornholm is the only area that avoids warnings of heavy rain or cloudbursts. But the rest of the country is encouraged to be extra vigilant about the weather situation. “When cloudbursts and heavy rain occur, a lot of rain falls in a short time. There is also a risk of thunder and strong gusts of wind if the showers are intense enough. It is important to be on guard,” explains Pernille Hansen. In particular, drivers should be cautious, as there are warnings of strong winds on the Great Belt Bridge. The ban on passage with trailers weighing under 2.5 tons remains in effect, as reported by Sund & Bælt on the social media platform X. The ban is expected to be lifted at 12:30.
