Copenhagen Zoo is facing a serious financial crisis and internal challenges, according to the recently published 2023 accounts. With a deficit of 20 million Danish kroner, which is five times more than the budgeted amount, the zoo has had to make several drastic decisions. This has led to the dismissal of three executives in May, as reported by Berlingske.
In an email to the employees, which Berlingske has gained insight into, CEO Pernille Mehl cited the significant financial loss as the reason for the layoffs. “In developing a new strategy and to ensure the future economic foundation, the competencies needed for the future have been thoroughly assessed. It should be noted in this connection that it is always regrettable to say goodbye to good employees,” she explained.
Pernille Mehl took over as CEO in 2023, but her time in the position has been marked by challenges. In April, 14 employees submitted a complaint through Copenhagen Zoo’s whistleblower program, expressing distrust towards her and describing her as both ‘disrespectful’ and ‘condescending’.
In addition to the serious financial deficit and internal conflicts, Copenhagen Zoo also recently bid farewell to their patron, Queen Mary. The Royal House announced that she would no longer fulfill this role as part of a decision to cease all their patronages. However, Chairman Jørgen Howitz took this decision calmly. “From the Zoological Garden, we greatly appreciate the recognition that various members of the Royal Family have shown us over the years. Since January 3rd, we have known that it was decided to cease all patronages, including ZOO. We naturally respect the decision and look forward to welcoming members of the Royal Family to the Garden on appropriate occasions in the future,” he told Berlingske.
