Danish Dental Association Launches Investigation into Youth Mouth Injuries

Several young people are experiencing serious oral injuries as a result of using snus-like products. The Danish Dental Association has therefore decided to launch an investigation to map the extent of the problem. The reported injuries include discoloration of teeth, gray mucous membranes, and sores on the gums. These injuries are seen in young people who use snus and nicotine pouches. According to the Danish Dental Association’s president, Susanne Kleist, the intention of the investigation is not only to inform dentists, but also to alert politicians to the seriousness of the problem. Although snus with tobacco is no longer legal to sell in Denmark, it is still possible to buy nicotine pouches, which according to Susanne Kleist, contain a significant amount of nicotine. Some of these pouches can have a nicotine content equivalent to 24 cigarettes, which can lead to a rapid and strong dependency among users. One possible reason for the increase in the use of these products may be that it has become legal to purchase them, and that there are more restrictions on indoor smoking. The investigation, expected to take about a month, involves members of the Danish Dental Association and aims to provide a more accurate picture of the extent and severity of these oral injuries.
