King Frederik and Queen Mary’s long-awaited visit to the Faroe Islands, which was supposed to take place in June this year, was canceled due to a extensive strike. However, a new date for the visit has now been set. The Faroese Prime Minister’s Office has announced that the royal couple will carry out their first official visit to the Faroe Islands from June 11 to June 13, 2025.
Plans for the visit are already well underway, and efforts are being made to put together an exciting and diverse program. Originally, the visit was scheduled for June 12 to June 14 this year, but due to the strike, it had to be postponed. Next summer’s program will therefore follow the original schedule and include visits to the cities of Tórshavn, Vágur, Fámjin, Tvøroyri, and Eidi.
The strike, which prevented the visit in June, was triggered by failed negotiations on a new collective agreement and involved various professions such as garbage collectors, truck drivers, port workers, warehouse workers, and cleaning staff. It resulted in empty shelves in supermarkets, closed institutions, and a shortage of gasoline. However, the conflict was resolved on June 9, four days after the cancellation of the royal couple’s visit.
Earlier this year, the royal couple carried out their first official state visits as king and queen to both Sweden and Norway. As planned, the royal ship “Dannebrog” was supposed to sail north in June to begin a realm voyage, which included visits to both the Faroe Islands and Greenland. Although the visit to the Faroe Islands was canceled, it appears that the trip to Greenland will proceed as planned. Here, the royal couple will pay visits from June 29 to July 6, where they will visit Pituffik Space Base, Qaanaaq, Aasiaat, and several cities in South Greenland.
