Denmark to be hit by heavy rain and local cloudbursts

Friday evening and into Saturday morning, Denmark will be hit by heavy rain and local cloudbursts, according to the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). DMI has issued a warning that applies from Friday at 20:00 until Saturday at 06:00.

The areas most at risk for the severe weather include South and South Jutland, Funen, Mid- and West Zealand, as well as Lolland and Falster. There is also a risk of heavy rain and cloudbursts in the rest of the country except for Bornholm.

Meteorologist Jesper Eriksen from DMI states that there is considerable uncertainty regarding the exact amount of precipitation and therefore urges people to stay updated on DMI’s website. The forecasts indicate that in several places, between 25 and 35 millimeters of rain can fall over a period of six hours. To meet the criteria for heavy rain, more than 24 millimeters of rain must fall in six hours, while a cloudburst is defined as 15 millimeters of rain in just 30 minutes.

Based on the weather forecast, the insurance company Tryg has issued a warning to customers in the affected areas. They are encouraged to secure their properties by closing and sealing doors and windows, as well as ensuring that gutters and drains are not blocked.

DMI expects a weather front to move over Denmark from the southwest on Friday evening and continue towards the north and northeast during the night. By Saturday morning, the front will have reached the northern part of the country and Kattegat. The areas marked in yellow on DMI’s map have the highest probability of being affected.

Jesper Eriksen adds that the weather will improve from the southwest during Saturday, providing a better outlook for Sunday when midsummer (sankthansaften) is celebrated. Sunday is expected to offer periods of sun and clouds, as well as a few light showers.
