Copenhell Festival Statue Controversy: Artist Rights Dispute Resolved with Compensation

A large statue at Copenhell has been created without the necessary rights. “Huge mistake,” says festival director. Visual artist Magnus Fuhr believes that the rock and metal festival Copenhell has created an artwork for which he holds the rights. The artwork depicts a devil figure making a hand gesture with one hand and holding a beer in the other. In 2022, the festival contacted the artist with the intention of creating a piece at the festival’s entrance, reports TV 2 Fyn. He won the bid with his company Chaos Engine, but the parties could not reach an agreement, and it fell through in April last year. He was contacted again by the festival, who wanted the rights but wanted a different artist to build it. The parties reached an agreement that Magnus Fuhr could accept in February. However, he never heard back from Copenhell, so he thought the project had once again fallen through. At the entrance of this year’s festival, Magnus Fuhr could see a piece that closely resembles the proposal he had previously submitted. “I think ‘what the fuck,’ what is happening? A lot of questions arise,” Fuhr tells TV 2 Fyn. “Does the person who built this know they don’t have the rights? What does Tuborg think about this? And why hasn’t Copenhell signed the contract?” He further explains that a lot of work went into the design idea, sourcing materials, and his ideas are one of his “finest assets.” According to Copenhell’s festival director, Jeppe Nissen, they have “sorted things out,” as compensation has been provided to Magnus Fuhr. The festival contacted him on Saturday, the second to last day of the festival. He calls it a “major mistake” that the festival did not “finalize all details” with Magnus Fuhr. Despite this, the visual artist believes that the festival’s actions reflect a “go for it” attitude. Visual artist Bo Benzon, who created the artwork at the entrance to Copenhell, explains that he believed the rights were secured.
