The concentration of Coronavirus in wastewater is increasing – SSI (Statens Serum Institut) predicts further rise
According to the latest update from the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), as reported by TV 2, there has been a significant increase in the concentration of Coronavirus in wastewater. This development is accompanied by an increased number of confirmed cases of infection.
Bolette Søborg, section leader at SSI, told TV 2 that the institute expects a continued increase in the number of infected individuals. “It has been a while since people in the target group were vaccinated, and it has also been some time since we had the large wave of infections during the winter. Therefore, immunity is also decreasing,” she explains.
The current variants, Omicron KP.2 and KP.3, are not considered more severe than previous variants, according to Søborg. However, they still pose a threat, especially as immunity in the population is decreasing.
On a European level, the large gatherings during the summer’s European Championship have raised concerns. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has therefore issued infection prevention recommendations to member countries. These recommendations include national risk assessments, as well as information on hygiene and vaccines.
With a presumed continued increase in infections and challenges such as large gatherings, the importance of ongoing vigilance and preventive measures to control the spread of the virus is emphasized.
