The National Bank is introducing an accession coin this autumn – coins with the king are expected in 2025. The National Bank is preparing a special accession coin to be introduced in the autumn, while the regular circulation coins with the new king are expected to be released in 2025. The decision comes after Queen Margrethe’s New Year’s speech, where she announced that she would pass on the throne to her son, setting in motion an extensive production process.
According to the National Bank, the regular coins featuring King Frederik will be launched in the second half of 2025. The king’s monogram will adorn the 1, 2, and 5 kroner coins, while the 10 and 20 kroner coins will bear his portrait. The National Bank has also planned to release a special accession coin into circulation during the autumn of this year. This 20 kroner coin will be legal tender and feature the king’s portrait on one side and Queen Margrethe’s on the other. The portrait of the king is designed by sculptor Eva Hjort, who has also designed the queen’s portrait.
The National Bank is responsible for the design of Danish coins, but the reigning monarch must approve the portrait before mass production can begin. The bank explains that this collaboration between the National Bank and the royal house is an integral part of the process when new coins are designed.
The accession coin will also bear the king’s motto “Forbundne, forpligtet, for kongeriget Danmark” (Connected, committed, for the Kingdom of Denmark). A motto is a phrase or word that the king has chosen to express his ideals or philosophy.
Both the accession coin and the new regular coins will be circulated as usual. The process involves coins being sent from the National Bank to cash handling companies, which then distribute them as change to retailers and banks. From there, the coins will reach regular use in stores and supermarkets. The current coins featuring the queen’s portrait will not be replaced.
