Danish Royals Test ATV on Future Route in Greenland

King Frederik and Prince Vincent Tested ATV on Future Route in Greenland

On the fourth day of the royal couple’s visit to Greenland, King Frederik and Queen Mary stopped by the country’s second-largest city, Sisimiut. They were welcomed by the city’s mayor, Malik Berthelsen, who, according to the media outlet Sermitsiaq, had a special invitation in store. The mayor offered the royal couple a dog sled ride, a traditional form of transportation in the region. “If you are considering dog sledding, you have the opportunity to dog sled from Sisimiut to Kangerlussuaq in the spring. I have started dog sledding myself, so just let me know,” the mayor said according to Sermitsiaq. However, it is unclear whether the royal couple accepted this invitation.

Many residents gathered at the city’s new dock at the harbor to welcome the couple. Frederik and Mary were dressed in Greenlandic national costumes, and the mayor took the opportunity to congratulate the queen on receiving the Self-Government’s Medal of Merit, Nersornaat in gold. According to Sermitsiaq, the honor is given for Queen Mary’s longstanding commitment to improving social conditions for children and young people in Greenland.

The visit to Sisimiut, which has around 5500 inhabitants, also included a visit to the Sisimiut Museum and Greenland’s national disability center, Pissassarfik. King Frederik also had the opportunity to visit “Dog Town” in Sisimiut, where the company Milak Production, which produces dog food, is located.

One of the highlights in Sisimiut, however, was King Frederik and Prince Vincent’s test drive on an ATV on the upcoming route between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq. An ATV is an all-terrain vehicle with four wheels, ideal for Greenland’s challenging terrain.

After the visit to Sisimiut, the royal couple will continue their journey aboard the royal ship to Greenland’s capital, Nuuk. The couple is expected to arrive on Thursday, where they will be welcomed by the city’s mayor, Avaraaq Olsen. The visit to Greenland concludes on Saturday.
