Danish Health Authorities Monitor Rising COVID-19 Cases and Variants

The coronavirus is once again showing signs of activity with new variants and altered symptoms. Although the infection rate is moderate, the development is concerning. According to the latest updates from the State Serum Institute (SSI), the concentration of coronavirus in the sewage is significantly increasing this week. The number of confirmed cases of covid-19 is also rising. Chief physician and section leader Bolette Søborg from SSI stated to TV 2 that they expect a continued increase, but not at the level of winter infection rates. The current 31 percent increase is classified by SSI as “significant”.

Unlike last year, when the infection rate decreased from now until July, this year the curve has been rising since the end of May. The reason for this development is mainly attributed to the omicron variants KP.2 and KP.3, driving the spread of infection in Denmark. These variants, which also dominate in the USA and several other countries, are among the most contagious recorded so far.

While the traditional symptoms of covid-19 still include fever, cough, and fatigue, the newer variants also show signs of gastrointestinal issues such as mild diarrhea and vomiting. This change in symptom profile reflects the evolutionary adaptation of the variants.

The curve for the spread of infection is markedly different from last year’s downward trend at the same time. The question of whether this increase will continue or decrease is under constant monitoring by Danish health authorities. With ongoing updates from the State Serum Institute and a focus on the new omicron variants KP.2 and KP.3, the fight against covid-19 remains a top priority for Denmark and the international community.
