Saturday will bring Denmark a severe bout of weather with rain, strong gusts of wind, and possible cloudbursts. Residents in the southern parts of the country may wake up to clear weather and sun, but the calm conditions will be short-lived. According to Jens Lindskjold, the on-duty meteorologist for the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), a low-pressure system from the North Sea will bring thunderstorms that will hit East Jutland and Funen first thing in the morning and later move towards Zealand and Bornholm.
Lindskjold explains: “There can be a lot of rain in a very short period of time, and we also expect hail and strong gusts of wind.” The west coast of Jutland will initially escape the worst of the bad weather, but late in the evening and night, there are forecasts for gales and gusts of wind that could reach up to a strong storm with speeds of up to 30 meters per second.
“It is unusual at this time of year, when the holiday homes are filled. We are concerned that large branches may break, and trees may topple,” Lindskjold warns, urging people to secure loose objects. Fortunately, the windy conditions will be short-lived, and Sunday’s weather will be considerably more tranquil. “It won’t be scorching hot, but pleasant summer weather where not much terribly exciting will happen,” the meteorologist concludes.
